Student Awards

Congratulations to Brendan Richards, PhD Candidate in the Department of Civil and Resource Engineering on receiving the 2024 G.J. Jackson Fellowship from the Canadian Institute of Steel Construction, in recognition of his research on steel structures. This prestigious award, valued at $25,000, was conferred to Brendan on Wednesday, November 13th at the 95th Canadian Steel Conference in Calgary, AB.

It is the second year in a row that this fellowship has been awarded to a student in Dr. Tousignant's Group. Last year it was awarded to PhD Candidate Ben Newcomb. These back-to-back awards are a bold recognition of 美女做爱's commitment to excellence in steel research.

Canadian National Rock Mechanics Student Design Challenge: Congratulations to Baixi Chen and Stuart Cowper, MASc Students in the Civil and Resource Engineering Department on winning 2nd place at the Canadian National Rock Mechanics Student Design Challenge!

Undergraduate Hydrogeology Award: Congratulations also go out to Sarah Hall, Civil Engineering Undergraduate Student on receiving an Undergraduate Hydrogeology Award at the Geological Society of America Meeting in Pittsburgh for her research on Sable Island ponds and groundwater.

Canadian Geotechnical Society G. Geoffrey Meyerhof Award: Dr. Hany El Naggar, Professor of Geo structural Engineering, is the 2024 winner of the prestigious G. Geoffrey Meyerhof Award from the Canadian Geotechnical Society (CGS). This award recognizes outstanding contributions in soil mechanics and foundation engineering. Dr. El Naggar鈥檚 nomination for this award was due to his pioneering work on the seismic performance of corrugated steel plate culverts which led to revising the seismic provisions in the Canadian Highway Bridge Design Code (CHBDC, 2019). This revision ensures enhanced safety and resilience of infrastructure, and Dr. El Naggar's contributions have been instrumental in shaping these advancements. In addition, in the CFEM 2023, the latest version of the Canadian Foundation Engineering Manual, Dr. El Naggar introduced an improved pile design procedure that significantly enhances the consistency of pile capacity calculations by different designers. This improvement reduces design capacity discrepancies and promotes reliable and efficient pile design.

Canadian Institute of Steel Construction H.A. Krentz Award: For the second time in five years, the Canadian Institute of Steel Construction (CISC) presented Dr. Kyle Tousignant, Associate Professor of Civil Engineering, with the H.A. Krentz Research award. Congratulations Dr. Tousignant! This award recognizes the researcher with the highest ranked proposal in CISC's annual research grants competition based on the special merit and interest of their topic, and with promise that it will make a significant contribution to advances in the economy and safety of steel structures.
